Mooseheart Admissions

Mooseheart CampusMOOSEHEART CHILD CITY & SCHOOL is a residential childcare facility, located on a 1,000-acre campus 38 miles west of Chicago. The Child City is a home for children and teens in need, from infancy through high school. Dedicated in July 1913 by the Moose fraternal organization, MOOSEHEART cares for youth whose families are unable, for a wide variety of reasons, to care for them. Some have lost one or both parents; others are living in environments that are simply not conducive to healthy growth and development. Whatever the reason, the men and women of the Moose, through unparalleled generosity and volunteerism, furnish the resources necessary to care for children in need. The Moose fraternity provides children with a wholesome home-like environment and the best possible training and education.   Children live in one of thirty residences designed like a spacious single-family residence. Each is home for six to twelve children. The heart of the program is Family Teachers — providing a consistent, systematic method of care, with emphasis on social-skills development — skills essential for success in later life.

At the beginning of the school year, in September of 2006, Mooseheart added a new vocational training program.  The building previously dedicated to small engine repair has been converted to accommodate this new plan.  With the generous support of the Circle of Service Foundation in Chicago, the program was able to obtain a hydraulic lift, wheel balancer, wheel changer and various necessary tools.  In addition, the Foundation provided a new computer, monitor, keyboard, printer and the software necessary to diagnosis automobile problems.  This grant of $17,000 was a great boost to our brand-new program.

The three-year training program is now off to a great start with a newly installed overhead door and the equipment provided by the Circle of Service Foundation.  In addition, Mooseheart students now offer automotive services and/or repairs that include oil changes, tire rotation, and other necessary maintenance.

Red Stockings Thousands of stockings were hung at Mooseheart with care this holiday season. The paper stockings were part of a campaign organized by Moose Charities in November and the response was wonderful. More than $190,000 was raised through the campaign to date. Moose Charities wishes to thank everyone who took the time to mail back the stockings and for the generosity in the donations received.

Moose Charities takes great pride in announcing an innovative new approach to fundraising. Today, we are pleased to make known the opening of a spectacular project that has been created especially for support by those outside the Moose community.

With corporate support, foundation involvement and individual participation by those not previously aligned with the Moose fraternity, we proclaim that the James J. Davis Aquatic Center (previously known as “the pool”) will become a revolutionary focus for all donors. With new funding sources, we aspire to renovate the structure and mechanics, build new relationships with those not previously familiar with the good works of the Moose, and create a spectacular indoor facility for the kids and extended family of our Mooseheart community.

Moose Charities is charged with the primary goal of providing the necessary resources to enable the good works of helping needy children who live at Mooseheart Illinois, and is also devoted to assisting senior members who make their home at the senior citizen home community of Moosehaven Stephen Schmidt, the Mooseheart band director, has recently been awarded two grants. The first for $2,000 from Target for use with the Commercial Music Program. The second for $2,500 from Marshall Field's/Macy's for use with the general music program at Mooseheart. Congratulations to Steve and the Mooseheart Band.

It is Mooseheart’s policy to admit qualified children who have a need. The Admissions Committee considers all applications of children in need.

Buckeye Hall at ChristmasMoosehaven is a 70-acre community owned and operated by the Moose organization for its members and their spouses. It is located on the banks of the St. John's River in Orange Park, Florida, 15 miles south of Jacksonville, Florida.

After the 1913 founding of Mooseheart, the Moose organization's famed "Child City" for children in need, the fraternity turned its attention to plans for a home for its dependent retired members. Before Moosehaven was established, a number of elderly persons resided at Mooseheart, for a short period, but this was deemed an unsatisfactory solution.

The Moose originally bought a resort hotel on 26-acres at Orange Park; and, on November 1, 1922, Moosehaven was formally opened. The first 22 residents were those who had been living at Mooseheart. They set up housekeeping in the hotel which had been renamed Aid Hall.

Fishing TournamentFrom the beginning, much of the work necessary to keep Moosehaven running has been done by those who live there. And still today, as they are able, residents serve as their own gardeners, housekeepers, kitchen helpers, mail carriers, dining room helpers, and maintenance crew.

With land purchases, Moosehaven essentially grew to its current acreage by the 1960s. Since World War II, all of the original buildings have been replaced; during the 1990s most residential facilities were again thoroughly renovated or rebuilt - notably by the Ohio and Florida/Bermuda Moose Associations and the Women of the Moose. The physical plant today consists entirely of modern buildings designed and built to provide pleasant and comfortable accommodations, recreation, and care.

Huly 4th Bike ParadeEach of the buildings in which Moosehaven people reside is a self-contained home with its own sleeping and living rooms, kitchen, and dining room. The $16 million Life Care Center, completed in 2002, and designed and equipped for the needs of senior care, provides space for 170 beds and has its own therapy department, x-ray, laboratory, and pharmacy. It also boasts six dayrooms, a chapel, library, beauty salon and barbershop, and arts and crafts room. It is a four-building, interconnected, 130,000-sq.ft. complex offering state-of-the-art assisted-living care at various levels.

Talent Show

Thanks to the New York State Moose Association, Moosehaven residents also enjoy the fully equipped New York Exercise Center, completed in 1997, with indoor pool and bowling lanes, and worship in their own beautiful New York Chapel, built in 1972 at the center of campus. The bright, gracefully designed house of worship is served by Moosehaven's own Catholic and Protestant chaplains.

Celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2007,   Moosehaven, the "City of Contentment," makes every effort possible to provide security, comfort, and peace of mind to qualified Moose men and women of retirement age.
